Name of this device differ in different regions, for example in Europe it was called Visual Memory, North America – Visual Memory Unit (VMU), Japan – Visual Memory System. Visual Memory system module for Dreamcast could be used more than just a replaceable RAM memory card, it had its own built-in LCD display and control buttons and has also been designed with the ability to be connected to the console and to other VMSs. Also, users could load some mini-games on it, use it as a calendar or a clock – “it is the most versatile external device ever made for the system” – the developers stated.
Sega Visual Memory System had to be inserted into 1 of 2 slots on the Dreamcast controller. 2 VMS can be inserted simultaneously in a single controller. When VMS used separately from the Dreamcast, VMS acts as a file manager and a pocket game console. VMS (VMU) may be connected to the other VMS for the multiplayer game or file transfer.
On first use, the player is able to select one picture from the group of pictures and use it as a background. This image is used while in the console menu. It is usually replaced by the logo during the game. Some games display animations and others bring new background images. Sega Visual Memory System works on 2 Lithium batteries CR-2032. Without power supply VMS operates as a memory card and an auxiliary display, but user cannot play mini-games.
