Magnavox Odyssey 2 is a video gaming console, that was released in 1978. It is also known by several names – in Europe it is known as Philips Videopac G7000, in Brazil – Philips Odyssey, in USA – Magnavox Odyssey². In addition to these names, it had a number of other, less well-known. Odyssey 2 belongs to the second generation of game consoles. Despite the fact that it has more than 30 years, in 2009 it ranked 21 out of 25 among the greatest video game consoles.
One of the main differences from the first Odyssey² model called Odyssey is the use of programmable cartridges through which the user could get quite new graphics, save the game progress experience, improved interesting gameplay, scoring and music. The system has great potential due to the large number of games, the possibility of purchasing each game separately as well as the opportunity to purchase immediately a whole library of games, depending on the user’s interests. In addition, the system had its own built-in membrane keyboard, which was intended for educational games and even programming.
Magnavox Odyssey 2 have been successfully sold in the United States. By 1983, only on the US territory, it has sold nearly a million consoles. In Europe, the console also relished for many users. Known as Philips Videopac G7000 or just Videopac, it sold very well. Rare version of consoles called Philips Videopac G7200 sold exclusively in Europe and had a built-in black and white monitor. In Brazil the console became even more popular that in the US. Odyssey 2 was positioned as the best system for video games and learning.
